Blustery, cold and dark, Dumbo in the winter can feel downright hostile to the average townie looking for a good time. All that waterfront can summon winds of gale force—we know this because our sign blows over several times a year. But still the art-hungry mob appeared, looking for the new flesh, and we are happy to provide a space with alcohol and interesting things to look at.
Some highlights included JASON BARTELL’s graphite drawings, an astonishing series of “grievers”, the bejeweled and gilded grilles that adorn a set of front teeth, which were rendered so impeccably and unusually for the medium that many people we spoke to were totally unaware they were drawings at all. Former Scrabble champion RICHARD LUND’s disc sculptures also garnered much praise, with their intuitive regularity and architectural shapes.
EMILY NACHISON visited us the previous week to install White Mass, a billowing lattice structure of camouflage netting, white acrylic and crystals, which provided both a center of focus and an obstacle, and thoroughly belied her diminutive stature. And two large-scale paintings by AMANDA SCIULLO were particularly powerful with their inflected natural palette and frenzy of brushstroke layering, literally dripping with a muted intensity.
We were really amazed with the work, with the artists, with the crowd. We could not have asked for more.
